The Art of Self Promotion

Brief
This module is designed to give the student an insight into the theoretical and practical aspects of professional practice at home and abroad.
All students will be introduced to a broad spectrum of activity, through visiting companies and professionals. This will be linked with a programme of study, concerned with the preparation of the person and their work to access a chosen professional environment for placement purposes.
Work Requirement:
• An introduction to the work and best practices of professionals.
• Preparation of a professional C. V. & cover letters both in written & digital form.
• Preparation of a portfolio of work for presentation for print and screen.
• Tutorials, practice interviews and discussions to identify and organise a programme of study/placement appropriate to the career path identified.
• Introduction to Professional Practice, such as IPR & copyright law.
• Creation of a Business Plan for Entrepreneurs students will create a faux company and create a business plan for funding of their proposed business.
• A Blog that shows your process for this class.
Learning & Teaching:
Lectures, given by visiting professionals and/or by design consultants.
Learning achieved through mentoring, tutorials and independent study.
Portfolio surgeries, tutorials and interviews to define aspirations, select and organise work for interviews, to practice presentation and to research into relevant professional areas, at home or abroad.
Assessment:
Assessment strategy is a pass/fail. The experience of each student will differ greatly, due to the tailoring for particular needs.
Assessment rewards the pro-activity of the student for their engagement in, and commitment to, the processes involved in preparing for their possible placement or its design project equivalent.

This module aims to:
- Develop an awareness of professional practice and practitioners both locally, nationally and internationally; more specifically, related to a possible career path, through research, contact and association with professionals as visitors, lecturers and clients.
- Prepare the individual for a period of professional placement, or an equivalently appropriate experience.
- Develop communication, presentation and interpersonal skills through direct contact and practice.
On successful completion of the module the student will be able to:
1. Demonstrate a critical awareness of the design related industries, an understanding of responsible design and/or professional practice
2. Demonstrate critical analysis in the evaluation of research evidence or material
3. Utilise a range of communication skills through one or more of the following: written, visual, oral, aural or computer mediated communication
4. Possess an awareness of the professional
and ethical responsibilities of the designer
Assessment Feedback
Students will receive feedback on their work:
• Verbal (in group and 1-1) based on work in progress there will be ongoing critiques in class and electronically to assess your progress towards the final.
• Written. Each student will receive a written form outlining their compliance with the brief.
